What will be covered?
We will cover forest inventory from equipment selection and statistical analysis to final report preparation—and all the steps in between.

Who should attend?
If you already know a lot about inventory, this course will give you valuable shortcuts. If you do not measure trees often, this course will show you practical strategies and save you field time and money. Inventory is expensive - do it right, once!

Field sessions

Course Format
About 1/2 of the time indoors and 1/2 of the time in the forest!
We try to let you outside as much as possible!
Classroom (mornings) + Forest (afternoon) = Real world experience
Monday August 24 to Thursday August 27
Optional field day:
Friday August 28
8:00 am to 4:30 pm
Lunch: 12:00-1:00 pm


About the Instructors
John Bell, PhD
Helped Lu Alexander with the first variable-plot sampling short course in 1957 and has been the director of the Oregon State University course since 1959. Bell & Associates have given a similar course in Alabama, Alaska, Arkansas, Australia, British Columbia, California, Chile, Idaho, New York, Poland, Tennessee, and Washington. Dr Bell joined Oregon State University in 1959, retiring in 1985 to focus on inventory consulting.

Kim Iles, PhD
Was the principal inventory design consultant for the British Columbia Provincial Inventory, surveying an area of 250 million acres. Dr Iles' specialties include Variable Plot Sampling and 3P sampling, the dominant inventory systems used in North America. Kim has taught inventory techniques to several thousand professional cruisers on three continents.
